Women and Men: Together for a Safe Workplace

As they do every year, the SMSP Group took part in International Women’s Rights Day on March 8. This year’s theme was “Rights and Justice.”

In 2026, the SMSP Group is proud to strengthen its commitment to women through concrete, field-based actions aimed at its operational teams on the topic of sexism. These actions contribute to the recognition and, above all, the implementation of women’s rights and justice for them.

Deepening and Coordination

In 2025, the Group offered its subsidiaries—KNS, NMC and Cotransmine—awareness workshops on sexism with the participation and support of Guénolé Bouvet and Maud Le Bar. These workshops, held in Nouméa and at NMC sites, were primarily intended for women.

Following these workshops, the Group began discussions with the NMC Human Resources Department to support actions undertaken by its subsidiary in this area. During 2025, two additional initiatives were validated and implemented: the creation of posters illustrating sexist behaviour, sexual assault, sexual harassment and rape.

In the same spirit, the SMSP Group also worked on producing a pilot video clip depicting a fictional sexist situation.

During this preparation phase, the Group and the HR departments also emphasized the importance of the DLS (Delegates for the Fight Against Sexism). These delegates act as real sentinels on site regarding sexist behaviours and remarks.

In 2026, the Group rolled out these materials and actions in the field in coordination with NMC, KNS and Cotransmine.

Poster Deployment

The posters created were distributed across all Group sites: from Nouméa (SMSP-SOFINOR, NMC Ducos and Cotransmine Numbo) to Ouaco (NMC and Cotransmine Téoudié), as well as Nakéty (NMC), Poya (NMC) and Vavouto (KNS).

The main objective of these posters is to raise awareness by presenting concrete examples of sexist behaviour, sexual assault, sexual harassment or rape.

What may seem obvious is not always obvious to everyone, and visual representation helps distinguish between a joke or habit and normalized, everyday sexism.

Mixed Sexism Awareness Workshops

The second key action for the Group and its subsidiaries was the organization of mixed sexism awareness workshops.

Initially offered to women only in 2025—since they are the main people affected—both women and their male colleagues expressed the wish that these workshops be offered to all employees, regardless of gender.

This positive and encouraging sign prompted the Group and the Human Resources departments to work together throughout 2025 and 2026 to make these workshops accessible to as many employees as possible in 2026.

The workshops began on Tuesday, March 10 and Wednesday, March 11 at the NMC Ouaco site in the municipality of Kaala-Gomen. They were spread over two days and six different time slots to reach all teams, including those working at the seaside facilities.

Cotransmine employees from Téoudié also joined the NMC Ouaco seashore workshops. It was a moment of awareness and reflection for everyone, but also an opportunity to strengthen connections between subsidiaries.

More than one hundred employees took part in these sessions, which led to rich and engaging discussions. Employees asked many questions about gestures or comments that may seem harmless or habitual but can nevertheless constitute sexism.

Some examples of questions included:

“Can I tell a woman ‘smile’ if I see she looks upset?” Would you say the same thing to a man if he looked upset?

“Can I shake a woman’s hand?” Yes, if she also extends her hand. If she does not, it may mean she is not comfortable with physical contact—and that is perfectly okay.

During these workshops, the SMSP Group emphasized that the objective was not to judge or put teams on trial, but rather to identify sexist behaviours and remarks so that they can be addressed and stopped.

The goal is to enable teams to work in a safe workplace, respectful of everyone’s boundaries and free from inappropriate behaviour or comments.

Short and Interactive Activities

Other activities were also organized during the week of March 9, including a “mobile debate” workshop. This short activity invites participants to position themselves on either side of a line on the floor depending on whether they consider a statement sexist or not.

This first workshop, which will be offered at other sites, took place at the SMSP-SOFINOR offices in Nouméa. In a light and engaging atmosphere, participants positioned themselves on the “sexist” or “non-sexist” side of the line according to the statement presented.

The exercise proved particularly interesting as it generated discussions—and sometimes debates—depending on the statements and participants’ positions. It helped raise awareness while also highlighting the nuances of behaviours and comments depending on context.

A second interactive workshop called “Future Fresco” will also be offered at sites in Nouméa. This activity allows participants to freely express their views on sexism by writing or drawing on a strip of paper the changes or improvements they would like to see.

Next Steps: Continuing Workshops and Sharing Materials

While International Women’s Rights Day takes place on a single date—March 8—the Group’s awareness campaign on sexism is intended to continue throughout the year.

Additional posters will be deployed and awareness workshops will soon continue at NMC Nakety and Poya, and at KNS, depending on operational constraints.

The Group will also continue producing educational materials, particularly awareness videos featuring volunteers from different sites.

The SMSP Group communications team would like to warmly thank and congratulate all employees who participated in the workshops, those who helped put upl the posters, and the management teams within the subsidiaries who made it possible to hold the workshops and distribute the posters.

Let us continue working together to build a healthy workplace that respects everyone’s boundaries, enabling us to achieve our operational objectives in health, safety, and in alignment with our values.

The post International Women’s Rights Day 2026 – March 8 first appeared on SMSP.

Commitment is measured in times of hardship.

On 28 November 2025, despite the critical and worrying situation faced by the SMSP Group and its subsidiaries, employees gathered for the 25th time to honour and remember those who lost their lives on 28 November 2000.

On that day in 2000, SMSP’s management team perished in the tragic crash of their helicopter at Chefao, in the tribe of Kouergoa (Boulouparis municipality), as they were travelling to Nakéty for work.

Aboard the aircraft were then-CEO Raphaël PIDJOT; Mine Director Jean-Pierre GASTALDI; Technical Director Jean-Pierre LAPOUS; Finance Director Régis VIVIER; two consultants from Falconbridge, Pierre THOLLOT and Robert GARDINER; and their pilot, Jean-Marc DALMASSO.

The tragedy left a deep mark not only on SMSP, but on New Caledonia as a whole. It also profoundly affected the members of the Kouergoa tribe, who were the first to reach the scene and discover the victims.

Simon, an elder from Kouergoa, recalls being in his field when he heard the dull thud of the crash—“like an explosion,” he says, his gaze distant and filled with pain.

Since that day, every year on 28 November, residents of Kouergoa and volunteers from SMSP and its subsidiaries gather to walk to the crash site and honour the memory of the men who died in those rugged mountains.

Claudine, one of the women of the tribe, remembers: “At first, there were only a few of us. Then more people from the tribe began to join.”

Today, the Kouergoa 28 November Association coordinates the commemoration together with SMSP, its subsidiaries, and the Widjè Committee—volunteers from the group and its companies who have formally organised themselves. Over the years, the event has become an annual gathering for the group, a moment of sharing, connection, and a reminder of SMSP’s purpose: to serve the country.

This year, the situation facing the SMSP Group—already under Safeguard mode—is particularly worrying. The NMC site in Nakéty had been closed for 18 months before reopening, while the Kouaoua site has been shut down since September 2025. Cotransmine is facing equally severe challenges. In South Korea, our subsidiary SNNC is grappling with fierce competition from low-cost Indonesian nickel ore and ferronickel, produced with little regard for communities or the environment. KNS, meanwhile, has remained in cold standby since the 1st of September 2024.

Despite this context, SMSP, its subsidiaries, the Widjè Committee, the Kouergoa tribe, and the 28th of November Association were determined to maintain the event.

Nearly 150 people—employees, families, and relatives of the victims—gathered in Kouergoa on the 28th of November 2025 to walk up to the hut erected at the crash site.

The commemoration, akin to a pilgrimage, is a moment where effort and perseverance bring people together. Each participant—employees, families, the broader community—walks at their own pace, sharing stories and support. The atmosphere is warm and inclusive, bringing together the youngest and the oldest. Along the trail, Sonia and Audrey could be seen each carrying their child on their shoulders—a moving symbol of shared and transmitted memory. Henri and Marcel from Cotransmine, who will retire on the 8th of December after more than 20 years with the company, were also present—role models for all and a testament to the enduring bonds within the group.

The day began at 8 a.m. with the arrival of the first participants. The PIDJOT clan, family of one of the victims, opened the ceremony with a traditional greeting, followed by SMSP’s greeting to the Kouergoa tribe and its customary authorities.

The group then departed—first by car convoy to the entrance of the trail, then by foot, to the crash site.

The Kouergoa tribe had prepared a buffet meal, warmly welcomed by participants – who may have left sweat on the steep slopes of Kouergoa – but returned home with renewed determination in spirit and stride.

The event wrapped up at 5 p.m. with a farewell gesture, before everyone set out for home—from Kouergoa to Nouméa, from Kouergoa to Nakéty, Koumac, and even further. A journey from the farthest corners of the country to feel closer, tomorrow, to one another.

Thank you to the Kouergoa tribe, congratulations to all participants, and see you next year!

Decarbonisation refers to all policies and measures aiming to avoid, reduce or even eliminate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated when using fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas).

Highlights of the conference

During the conference, it was widely acknowledged that decarbonisation is still an unfamiliar concept, requiring a major educational effort. Raising awareness among institutions, businesses and economic players of the issues involved in this transition now appears to be a major challenge. There is still a real gap between academia and industry.

For Catherine RIS, President of the UNC:

“This event, which was co-constructed with our institutional and economic partners, has met the expectations of the University of New Caledonia. It enabled us to structure and strengthen the dialogue between the academic, industrial and institutional spheres around the low-carbon transition, in a local context marked by considerable economic, environmental and social challenges”.

Three major themes emerged from the workshops

The urgent need to adapt training, both initial and continuing, to allow the industrial sector to manage the challenges of decarbonisation as well as transmutation in the industrial sector;

A clear desire from companies to be supported in upgrading the skills of their teams, particularly in the areas of energy transition, change management and low-carbon technologies;

Promising avenues of applied research, offering strong potential for skills transfer and industrial innovation, particularly in CO₂ capture, waste recovery and the electrification of mining machinery, as well as future opportunities for economic development

Future prospects and commitments

The UNC was identified by participants as a key player in supporting this transformation. In short term, several actions are envisaged:

The development of new initial (and continuing) training courses, in particular through the creation of an industrial department at the IUT, and the introduction of a University Bachelor of Technology (UBT);

The design of continuing training courses as of 2025, in particular components to raise awareness of the challenges of the energy transition;

The structuring of collaborative research projects, more actively involving local businesses.

These initiatives are part of the ‘Skills and Professions of the Future’ call for expressions of interest, in which the UNC is actively participating.

Closer collaboration with SMSP

This conference is part of an ongoing partnership between UNC and SMSP. Along with the Northern Province, SMSP supported UNC’s application for the DiversiTES Project, the winner of a previous AMI. This support demonstrates the importance the SMSP Group attaches to developing the skills of local players and supporting the transition to a more sustainable industry.

She is retiring after 35 years of service.

She has seen the SMSP’s history and NMC unfold in front of her eyes.

“I joined in 1989 as a secretary at the age of 25 and we were then 60 members of staff. I then became head bookkeeper, where I was in charge of recruitment, dismissals, timekeeping, etc.”

Her eyes gazing into the distance, Josette remembers, measuring her words at the same time, recalling those 35 years, both rich and difficult, but with no regrets.

At the age of 25, with a High School Certificate with Administrative Major (Baccalauréat G1) in her pocket, she started working part-time at the Ouaco Post Office as secretary. She explains that there weren’t many people in Ouaco at the time, so when the SMSP’s Chief Accountant went off sick, they came looking for her to take over the position. She was recruited on a short fixed-term contract. Initially, she kept her part-time job at La Poste, where she was assured of stability, and worked for NMC beside. One thing led to another, she was offered the chance to stay with SMSP, and after 9 months was finally offered a permanent contract. That was it, she became part of the SMSP Family.

From then on, Josette learned everything ‘on the spot’. “I remember how hard it was to learn about to treat overtime compensation, pay scales and so on. I had a High School Certificate, a basic qualification, so I had to learn about everything’.

She remembers she was in charge of the SMSP workforce at the time, while Coco Peyrolles, who departed in 2023, was in charge of the drivers. She spent sleepless nights learning, examining account books to familiarise herself and carry out her duties to the best of her ability. She was also a trainer, as she trained the secretaries at Poum and Ouaco.

At the same time, Josette was also in-charge of staff management of SMSP and CMC (Compagnie Maritime et de Challandage), now known as Cotransmine.

The group has a genuinely rich history, and Josette was one of its privileged witnesses. As she recalls, she confides with emotion that the crash of the SMSP helicopter in 2000, is undoubtedly one of the events that will have marked her for life.

She explains, ‘The weather was overcast that day. And all afternoon I received calls asking me if the helicopter had arrived? Did anyone in Ouaco know where the helicopter was located? It was not until the following day that they heard the tragic news of the disappearance of part of the members of SMSP’s Management Team, including the then SMSP Chairman. She knew them all. ‘It was horrible’.

To those who come later, Josette is keen to share her thoughts, and reminds us that mining is a sector that fluctuates, with ups and downs. There used to be Japanese and Australians, now it’s the Chinese and Koreans. And that’s something everyone needs to be aware of. You have to work with perseverance and professionalism when things go well, and you have to be grateful. It’s not a certain. Everything can fall from one day to the next, sometimes you get back up, sometimes you don’t.

‘We’re surrounded by competitors and even if we have a rich territory, we’re not the only ones. We have to be aware that this is a very uncertain sector. You have to be efficient, determined and committed at all times’.

There’s another point that bothers and worries her: she remembers saying, ‘Before, the company was ours, the company’s good results were also our good results, we felt concerned and united’.

Today, it seems to her that the new arrival staff come more often for the salary than anything else, with no other motivation. They don’t feel concerned by the end result, or by the company. There’s no real cohesion. ‘If the mine works, so much the better, but if it doesn’t, well, too bad.

Josette proudly hung up her apron on 31 January, but admits she didn’t really realise it at the time. With depth and nostalgia, it seems, she explains that there are no more ‘Mondays’ when that’s it! back to work! After a week, she realised, and admits thoughtfully, ‘I was a bit lost’. From one day to the next, she had no goals, no reason to get up – it was overwhelming.

‘The worst thing is that I’m always looking for things to do, fortunately I’ve been looking after my grandchildren.

The compass is completely out of alignment (laughs!!).

But Josette is not a woman who wallows in boredom. She has lots of ideas, and always laughing, she says that the trick is to choose one.

Especially as she has a takeaway and dressmaking licence. She’s struggling to reactivate it, for example. What’s more, she has always been active in community life in addition to her duties with the SMSP and then the NMC. She was a member of parents’ associations at the time of her younger brothers and sisters, then for her children and now for her grandchildren.

She has set up associations. Notably for the PHOK Association (Historical Heritage of Ouaco and Kaala Gomen), which she co-founded alongside Gaston JIZDNY. ‘Our love and respect for the village of Ouaco united us in this initiative. In its day, this historic site represented a flagship vision of the Northern economy, just as the NMC embodies today for the Northern Province. Josette is currently President, having joined the organisation in 2009 alongside Gaston JIZDNY, founder and former President, a Ouaco leading dignatory.

As she says: ‘There’s no shortage of ideas, we just need to readjust our compass’.

One thing’s for sure, in Ouaco or Voh, she’ll be active right to the end.

The post Josette KROMOWIRONO, 35 years of dedication and a meritorious career first appeared on SMSP.

As the Group faces economic challenges, SMSP has still wished to maintain its commitment to the United Nations “Orange the World” campaign to fight violence against women and girls.

This year, an educational workshop on sexism was held by SMSP and Cotransmine employees on Monday 25 November to mark the start of the campaign.

The workshop “Fresque du Sexisme”, led by the gender equality trainer, Maud LE BAR (https://ellelabiencherche.com/), brought together a dozen employees around a collective intelligence experience. The workshop was conducted in 3 phases:

Phase 1 – Reflection: linking collective stories to individual experiences and raising awareness.

Phase 2 – Feelings & Emotions: Exchanges on emotions and experiences.

Phase 3 – Levers of action & scenarios: projection of everyday situations in order to avoid sexism.

This workshop allowed everyone to identify at first gender-based protests and its systemic nature, that is to say, conveyed, perpetuated and sometimes protected by society.

Whether it is the phenomenon of categorization, injunctions, organization of society or impacts, sexism is sometimes obvious, sometimes insidious. Through exchanges, the participants were able to understand the impact of gender stereotypes and give themselves the opportunity to curb gender-based dynamics.

“Worried”, “frustrated” or “lucky”, employees spoke about their feelings and their perception of sexism. A moment of intense exchange and sharing.

This workshop is part of the Group’s commitment to contribute to a better consideration of gender issues and to act on individual and collective mentalities and behaviors to reduce inequalities, gender-based violences and protests.

The post A workshop to contribute to an equal and inclusive society first appeared on SMSP.

On Monday August, 19 and Thursday August 22, the Koniambo Nickel Work Council organised two ‘Goodbye Days” for Koniambo Nickel employees at the Living Base Site in Vavouto.

As announced in a press release dated July 26, the redundancy procedures for economic reasons take effect from August, 31, 2024 for almost all the 1,200 employees at the site.

As a reminder, on 29th February 2024, the Koniambo Nickel Site was put on warm standby, with the retention of the entire salaried employees, paid by Glencore for a period of 6 months, i.e. until 31st August 2024. This agreement was reached thanks to the joint efforts of Glencore, SMSP and KNS.

At the beginning of June, as required by law, the 3-month redundancy proceedings were nevertheless launched, while the search for a buyer was still underway.

Unfortunately, despite discussions and efforts to find a buyer, the 6-month period came to an end on 31st August. On July 26, Koniambo Nickel announced the arrangements for terminating the employment contracts of its 1,200 employees.

Now that negotiations on severance packages have been completed and an agreement signed, the Work Council wanted to mark the end of this period in a more enjoyable way.

According to Frédéric NARCISSOT, the Work Council organised two dedicated days on Monday 19 August and Thursday 22 August to get together and share a last moment together. He also said that it was a way of bringing everyone together and measuring with pride the extensive scale of the journey undertaken.

During these two days, employees were able to come to the Living Base Site and share a number of activities and moments of sport and enjoyableness.

A bingo activity particularly mobilised the workforce with gifts that were worth the seriousness that could be seen on the faces. The prizes included mobile phones, connected watches and gift vouchers.

Competitors and customers were able to meet up on the football and volleyball fields adjacent to the Living-Base Site for friendly matches, while others took advantage of the baby-foot and tennis tables in the Recreation Room.

Sarah GUERBER-CAHUZAC, as of the KNS Communications Department, proposed a related wheel game for the winning players to be rewarded with KNS goodies.

The Magik Miror NC Service Provider was also on board to offer everyone the chance to immortalise moments as a team or as a stunning pair. It was an essential part of the day, even for those who were reluctant to be taken in photos.

The service provider DJ Auguste and teams offered quality bingo entertainment, as well as spot karaoke performances. Admittedly, the shy volunteers didn’t push each other, but there’s no doubt that the crowd’s support for the bravest created a warm and relaxed atmosphere.

And on the second day, the whole crowd joined in for one last dance together. The emotions no doubt gripped everyone present. A last dance to say goodbye. Around thirty employees, both accomplished and those more or less hesitant, got together on the same dance floor to shake-dance to the same Madison rhythm. The rest of the crowd cheered them on and joined in with their whistles and applauds. It was a festive atmosphere that reflected the dignity of the employees, who know that the future will be difficult, but New Caledonia is a country of warriors and pioneers, and it is together that we will bounce back.

Visits to the Plant and the Mine were also arranged, a way for the workforce to discover other facets of this site rich in history, and unique in its infrastructure with a mine, one of the longest conveyors in the world, a dedicated power station and a deep-water port.

During the visit to the mine, visitors were able to assess the enormous amount of cleaning work carried out by the teams.

While Jean-Christophe PONGA described the chemical requirements and the need to mix the ore to feed the plant, the most beautiful massif of Koniambo stretched majestically before the eyes of visitors over kilometres of mining space, as if to remind them of the treasures in its bowels. Trucks and shovels are now parked in the docks and dedicated areas.

SMSP, the majority and local shareholder of the Northern Plant, made the trip and is present with its communications team, and above all with its Chairman and CEO Karl THERBY.

Karl THERBY made sure to address the teams who attended the two-days event, underlining his admiration for the KNS workforce, which has consistently demonstrated the quality of the human resources at the North Plant over the past 6 months. He thanked all of them, including the subcontractors, who were the first to be impacted in February when the plant was shut down. He highlighted the strength, dignity and resilience of the employees, who have never ceased to protect their work tool. He also pointed out that the SMSP was pursuing its efforts with the groups that had shown an interest in the site with a view to resuming operations at a later date.

As Karl THERBY emphasised, he does not wish to ‘sell the dream’, but the project has emerged from the ground thanks to the will of the local population and all the stakeholders, and more than an economic and industrial tool, KNS is also the symbol of a bet on the future and on a peaceful upcoming mindset. He believes in the ability of the site and its employees to bounce back and build a future for tomorrow.

The SMSP Communications Team organised a quiz with questions on KNS history and organisation within the SMSP Group, giving employees the chance to win and be rewarded with SMSP and SNNC goodies.

These days were also an opportunity for the SMSP Group to recall the foundations of the Group’s History of the group including Koniambo Nickel.

While 31st August promises to mark the end of a whole era for many employees, they remain positive. Most of them are feeling ‘a twinge of sadness’ and ‘nostalgia’, but as some of them put it, ‘we still want to believe’ in a ‘tomorrow’, even if they are well aware that it won’t be soon.

In the meantime, the SMSP Group extends its sincere and warm thanks to the employees of Koniambo Nickel for these two days, and for these 20 years. The group is pursuing its undertakings and is dedicating all its efforts to the continued selection of a buyer.

We hope to see you all very soon!

The post ‘It’s a goodbye, not a farewell’ said SMSP’s CEO Karl THERBY first appeared on SMSP.

The “Chez Marcel” Shop in Ouaco was in mourning on Saturday 11 May 2024. It had just lost its owner Marcel BRESSLER, an emblematic figure in Ouaco, who passed away at the age of 86, surrounded by his family and friends.

Marcel BRESSLER was above all a strong family gentleman, surrounded by his children, such as Karl and Natacha, and his grandchildren. He was known for his kindness, goodwill and generosity towards the people of Ouaco and the surrounding area.

The SMSP Group and its subsidiaries, NMC and Cotransmine, would like to pay tribute to the work of this worthy man, who devoted 60 years of his life providing service to the village of Ouaco, its residents and visitors. The Chez Marcel Shop, to which he bequeathed his name, will continue to honour his memory.

His funeral took place on Monday 13 May 2024 in the Village of Voh which will be his last home.

Thank you Marcel!

The post A Ouaco monument has fallen, and with it a part of the village’s history first appeared on SMSP.

SMSP group wishes to inform you that Didier VENTURA was appointed as interim President of NMC since the 15th of March for a period of 6 months, thus until the 30th of September. In the meantime, our team has started a recruitment process aiming at identifying the best profile to fill the position on long term basis.

As a reminder, NMC is the New Caledonian extracting subsidiary which ore is sent to feed our off-shore plant of Gwangyang in South Korea, operated by a New Caledonian company as well, SNNC.

Didier VENTURA is very well known into SMSP group as he worked for KNS, and was the President of NMC in between 2014 and 2019. Besides its experience in nickel field and industry in New Caledonia is undeniable.

Didier comes back in a critical period for nickel market as nickel prices suffer significantly from the massive and low-cost production coming from Indonesia.

Didier replaces Isabelle WABETE who joined NMC in 2020 as President. It was very much a “back to the roots” for her as Isabelle participated to the launching of POSCO partnership before quitting SMSP group and returning to it when she joined Koniambo Nickel SAS.

Today, she quit her functions as President of NMC to fly toward new opportunities. SMSP group thanks her and wish her the best.

The post Change of President at NMC first appeared on SMSP.
