Under a self-referral to the Economic and Social Council, SMSP was heard by members of the Mining, Metallurgical & Energy Committee and that of Economic Development, Taxation & Budget. Given the unfavorable economic situation of the nickel industry, the discussions within the “Signatories Committee” on the country’ strategic industrial plan, and also the validation of the anti-trust law by the High Court on constitutional matters, SMSP’s written contribution focused on the fair access to mining resources, the complementarity of available production channels, and on the need to implement a strategy favoring the control and optimization of the resource for the country’s benefit.

The 5th New Caledonia Nickel Conference was held on July 1-3 2013 at Le Méridien Hotel in Nouméa. It was an event to analyze the market’s perspectives, at a time of critical challenges and high volatility of the markets. Key topics and questions currently affecting the nickel industry were explored at this conference.

“European steel manufacturers must react, warns Moll who suggests three solutions. By 2015, they could proceed with a consolidation, reducing their capacity from 8.3 to 5.7 Mt. This would allow to their production capacity to exceed 80%. Another way is to invest in upstream, which could reduce the price volatility of alloys. Posco, the Korean number one of stainless steel, has its own ferronickel plant supplied by a partnership with the SMSP in New Caledonia”.

Wednesday 10th August, during the plenary session of the Economic and Social Council held in Thio on the SLN mining centre, Dominique Nacci, Vice President of the Mine, Metallurgy and Energy Committee, has presented a restitution of the 4th Industrial Strategic Committee meeting held in Paris, and has further explained the mining resources calculation, the various nickel processes currently developed in New Caledonia, the impact on the nickel market and the local distribution of the added value generated by the nickel industry.

André DANG’s keynote address to the International Nickel’s Conference 2010
